The Shawl Collar: Not Just for Tuxedos
If you’re a sartorially inclined lad, chances are the mere mention of a shawl collar sends your mind racing to the tuxedo. And rightfully so. The shawl lapel made is migration from smoking jackets to tuxedos over a century ago, and it’s only gained in popularity as hollywood’s elite and style-conscious superstar athletes both look to add a level of sophistication to their red carpet attire.
So what’s all this have to do with style on the golf course?
Don’t worry, I’m not suggesting you suit up for your next round, but as good as the shawl looks on suits, blazers and tuxedos, it adds an equally elevated look to sweaters, too.
Shawl Collar Sweater
I’ll admit the modern-day mid-layers and performance sweaters are great in the elements, but in my mind nothing beats the style and warmth of a classic knit. While crewnecks, v-necks and 1/4-zips rule the closet, I’m here to propose you add a shawl collar sweater to the mix.
Benefits of the shawl collar are twofold.
First, they are crazy warm. Seriously. This isn’t the sweater you rock on a high-50s and sunny with a light breeze kind-of-day (that’s why you’ve got the lightweight v-or-crewneck). Instead, reach for the shawl collar on those super chilly or blustery days where you need something extra.
They tend to be a little thicker and the built-in roll-down knit collar keeps the chill off your neck, adding to the warmth. I’ve even left the collar up when wearing it under an outerwear piece on really cold and breezy days. Take that wind.
Second, the shawl collar is known to be flattering to most body types (Ah! Now I really have your attention). The rolled, rounded shape frames your face while the v-shaped front helps to create the appearance of a trimmer silhouette. And let’s be honest — the added touch of rugged elegance (yes, it’s a thing) doesn’t hurt either.
Stick with a standard shawl collar sweater rather than a cardigan style as the latter are often bulkier, which could interfere with your swing. My go-to is the G/FORE Shawl Collar Sweater, made from 100% Merino wool. An added bonus? It looks just as good off the course as it does on, making for a versatile piece in your wardrobe.
You won’t find a ton of golf-specific apparel companies with the shawl collar in their line (Linksoul offers a shawl collar too), but I for one, hope that changes soon.
